Personally Identifiable Information

About

This is a reminder to all YARG practitioners of the importance of safeguarding the Personal Identifiable Information (PII) of your organization and staff; subgrantee and partner organizations and staff; and individual program participants. Such information must be stored properly and transmitted securely using Federally compliant encryption methods.

PII refers to any information that may reveal the identity of an individual either directly or indirectly. This includes names, addresses, emails, social security numbers, and other identifying data elements or combinations of them. PII is contained in personnel files, participant data sets, performance reports, program evaluations, grant and contract files as well as other materials.

Please refer to this Employment and Training Administration (ETA) guidance letter for complete details on the proper handling of PII. Additional background on PII can be found on the U.S. Department of Labor's Guidance on the Protection of Personal Identifiable Information page.
