National Apprenticeship Week 2022

About

Gear Up for an Extra Special National Apprenticeship Week

This year’s National Apprenticeship Week (NAW) will be a particularly momentous occasion, as 2022 marks 85 years since the National Apprenticeship Act (NAA) first established Registered Apprenticeship (RA) as a national initiative. This milestone for the NAA will be the impetus to make NAW bigger and better than ever. Although the event is just a few months away (Nov. 14 -20), there’s still time to coordinate with program partners to plan a celebration worthy of this significant anniversary.

Looking Back
It was in 1937 that the NAA established RA nationwide, following Wisconsin’s creation of the first state system in 1911. By the mid-1940’s there were 6,200 Registered Apprenticeship programs across the country. Revised regulations issued in 2008 increased program flexibility to better serve apprentices in the 21st century. The past 15 years have seen additional progress. In 2021 there were nearly 27,000 active RA programs educating and training more than 593,000 apprentices.

Moving Forward
We have made enormous progress, but there is still so much work to do. An expansion of the apprenticeship system is a goal of the current administration. And RA programs are undertaking vigorous efforts to make opportunities more broadly available with an emphasis on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA).
So, let’s continue to make history! As we reflect on the journey apprenticeship has taken, let us build on that momentum and aim for an even more successful future.
